I am so sorry to read this, Suzi. It always seems like everything happens at once. You and yours are in my thoughts through this difficult time.

He has a tumor in the center of his brain and they can't remove it surgically. Radiation is an option, but even if he responds well he would only have another 9 months. Without radiation he has a couple months at most. We're in the process of getting more details. I'm devastated. Having just lost Nine and Kuma this summer, I can't believe this is happening. I'm in shock. oh no.....that is terrible news. I am so sorry...

I'm so sorry! Big hugs all around to you and the pups. Mt last dog had been diagnosed in a similar fashion (inoperable tumor, radiation won't really make it go away) so I understand the pain you are feeling. Enjoy the precious time you guys have, extra treats and extra cuddles. I'm just so so sorry that you have to go through this.

Thank you so so so much for your support everyone. Brook, Barley and I really appreciate it.
We're going to start radiation treatment on Monday. He's also on phenobarbital (to prevent further seizures) and prednisone. The vet feels like he is a good candidate for the radiation therapy, because he is otherwise in very good health and he's young enough to handle it. She gave us the 9 months more as the average expectation for being able to control symptoms and further growth of the tumor. The tumor is not going to go away, and we know that ultimately he will succumb to this. But she thinks he has a good chance of having a happy life with treatment, so we're going to do it. We have the pet health insurance for this very reason. If it seems like he's suffering or it's not helping, we'll let him go.
I picked him up last night and apparently he made a lot of friends with the staff. They were really loving on him. It helped knowing that he was being well taken care of. I was very impressed with this VCA hospital. They took me back where he was being cared for before and after the procedures, and it was very clean and comfortable. Everyone was very professional and kind. I was so worried that they would suck.
So now I'm doing research on what we should be doing for him diet wise. I'm sure I'll get more info when we meet with the oncologist on Monday, but does anyone have any resources or suggestions?

Suzi, a good friend of mine took her Husky through brain surgery and radiation years ago. I could put you in touch if you're looking for more info.

So sorry, sending thoughts and prayers your way! I am glad you finally have an answer, though, not knowing makes you feel even more helpless, at least now there is action you can take.

Suzi, a good friend of mine took her Husky through brain surgery and radiation years ago. I could put you in touch if you're looking for more info. Thank you Erin, that's a very kind offer. I'm hoping to get more info on Monday when we do the consultation with the oncologist. I'm sure I'll have more questions after that. Maybe your friend knows of a helpful online forum or other resource?

^I'll ask her, Suzi. I know at the time no one was doing brain surgery on dogs, so I don't think there were any resources, but there might be more now.
