Suzi, Devastating news. I am sorry that the vets did not tell you what happened. I hope the reason for this tragedy shows a dogs love and brings you peace. For some reason you were given special dogs. And I know something extraordinary will come out of this, although we may never know, Im sure of it. You are a special person, who has a gift in helping others.Thank You for that. Things will come around. Please give love to Barley for me.

So here is where we are, after a lot of thinking and talking. I did end up contacting Colorado State University vet teaching hospital (thank you SO much Emily). They reviewed Barley's case, and decided that he is a candidate for an alternative type of radiation therapy that is only available at CSU and two other universities in the country. This type of radiation has a better chance of success with Barley's type of tumor, and he only has to receive three treatments. This is a huge advantage, since he is at such a high risk under anesthesia. We decided to go for it, and I am driving out to Colorado with Barley on Sunday. His CT and mapping will be Monday morning, with treatments on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We won't know how much of an impact, if any, the treatment will have for a month or two. They did warn us that because Barley already has such severe clinical symptoms, he may not improve much at all. We are all very hesitant to make any prognosis predictions, so we're just taking it each day at a time. Particularly after our experience with Nine's illness, I think we'll know when it's time to stop fighting this and let him go. One happy side note is that I will be meeting up with Emily in Wyoming! I'm so excited to meet her, Mr. Peabody, and Lulu.

Fingers and paws crossed that it turns out well for Barley (and you!). You are such a strong person Suzi, I would have lost my mind six times over by now. Barley is lucky to have someone has loving and dedicated as you.

I really really don't know how I would get through this without my RPBF friends. Thank you so so much to each of you for your thoughts and support. Words aren't sufficient to express my appreciation.
Carolann, Kaleena, and Andrea... you all made me tear up, and I'm not usually much of a crier. Thank you for your kind words.

Good luck to you and Barley! I think you will like the vet school! We have gone through the radiation for a heart based tumor on our Sparky at WSU and have always been grateful for their expertise and care, despite his poor prognosis. Nice having all the experts in one place! Our crazy household will be sending good thoughts your way...safe travel!
